Geography:
Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold place?
In this unit, the children will be introduced to the basic concepts of climate zones. They will explore how to locate the Northern and Southern hemispheres, before mapping out hot and cold places globally, using temperature maps. They will compare the features of Greenland and Australia, discovering how humans have adapted to these locations.
Design and Technology:
In our Design and Technology lessons, we will be making pouches! This learning builds upon the learning the children completed in Year 1 when they made puppets. The children will learn about a running stitch and how to sew a running stitch with regular-sized stitches and understand that both ends must be knotted in order for this stitch to be secure. The children will prepare and cut fabric to make a pouch from their chosen template. Once this template has been prepared, the children will use a running stitch to join the two pieces of fabric together. Finally, the children will choose how to decorate their pouch using a range of materials. The children will then share their finished products with Year 1 to make comparisons between their creations in Year 1 and Year 2 and critically appraise the final product.
Computing:
In our computing unit, we will be introduced to on-screen programming through ScratchJr. The children will explore the way a project looks by investigating sprites and backgrounds. They will use programming blocks to use, modify, and create programs. Children will be introduced to the early stages of program design through the introduction of algorithms.
PE:
In athletics, the children will explore how to run at different speeds, how to jump over a distance and how to accurately throw. We will explore how to measure our performance before competing to improve our own scores and compete against others. In our striking and fielding games lessons, we will explore the principles of defending and attacking. We will explore how we can use throwing, catching, tracking and striking within these games and how to score points within these games. We will also explore how to play to the rules, use tactics to win games and show respect to all participants within the game.
Jigsaw:
In our ‘Changing Me’ unit, we will be exploring a number of strands. Firstly, we will be linking to our learning in Science and recognising how we change as we get older, and recognise where we are on the continuum from young to older. We will also look at the physical differences between boys and girls, using the correct names for parts of the body and appreciate that some parts of our body are private.
Music:
In music, our social question is ‘How does music teach us about looking after our planet?’ We will be looking at combining our learning throughout the year to produce a big concert. We will look at performing three songs: The Sunshine Song (pop), Four White Horses (calypso) and Down By The Bay (Reggae). The children will also play instruments as part of their final performance, as well as appreciating the music that they listen to.
