Wider Curriculum

History:

In History, we will be learning about World War 2. We will begin by exploring why Britain went to war and the lead up to the beginning of the war in 1939. We will also look at the Battle of Britain and the different phases of the battle. Our learning will become more localised when we explore the importance of Defford Air Base in the war and what impact the war and the building of Defford Air Base had on the local area. Our learning will culminate in a trip to Defford Air Base, where we can apply and extend our knowledge further.

Art:

In our Art unit of work, we will be focusing on architecture. We will have a key focus on observational drawing, printmaking and building design. Through the unit, we will be learning how to add composition, draw to proportion and add in key features. We will look at the work of Hunderwasser and evaluate his work.

Design and Technology:

Within our D&T lessons, we will be exploring how to prepare and cook a version of a Bolognese sauce. We will firstly look at the process of beef production, before researching a traditional recipe and making changes to it. We will then select ingredients before preparing and cooking our own sauce.

P.E.

Our P.E. lessons will take place on a Wednesday and Friday. This term, we will be developing our teamwork skills in our football sessions, as well as learning to dribble, pass, receive and track the ball. In our OAA lessons, we will explore how to work individually, collaboratively in pairs and together as a team, communicate and listen effectively, share ideas to create strategies and plans to produce a solution. We will also develop our map reading skills to follow directions.

Music:

Our music lessons will focus on 'Melody and Harmony in Music.' A melody (or a tune) is a group of notes played one after another. In music, ‘melody’ contrasts with ‘harmony’. Harmony means notes which are played at the same time, like chords. Composers often think of a melody and then add harmony to it. We will be explore melody and harmony in music within our singing lessons, when we are learning all of the different songs that we will need when we attend the Young Voices Concert, which will take place in January 2026.

Computing:

In Computing, the children will develop their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices. They will consider small-scale systems as well as large-scale systems. They will explain the input, output, and process aspects of a variety of different real-world systems. The children will discover how information is found on the World Wide Web, through learning how search engines work (including how they select and rank results) and what influences searching, and through comparing different search engines.

French:

This half term we will be learning the names of different European countries and ask and answer questions about where we live and have visited. The children will be exploring the different regions of France and how they are similar or different. The children will look in detail at what it is like to visit a particular part of France and will create a poster or leaflet to persuade others to visit too. European Day of Languages will be celebrated at the end of September.

Jigsaw:

In Jigsaw, we will be focusing on ‘Being Me in My World’. The children will learn all about being a citizen, our rights and responsibilities, rewards and consequences, how behaviour can have an impact on different groups and the importance of everyone having a voice. We will also explore the British Value of democracy.
