Curriculum Enrichment

Computing - Pictograms

In our Computing lessons, we are learning about how to present data. We have explored how to collect and record data using tally charts. We recognised that 5 tallies would create a gate. Then we counted our tallies to find the total for each animal. Finally, we explored how this could look in a pictogram.

Grouping in Maths

In Maths, Year 2 have been learning about dividing. We have looked at using a strategy called grouping to help us find the answers to a number of division questions. Grouping is when we divide a number of objects into equal groups. We know the total number of objects and the number of objects in each group, but we do not know how many equal groups there are.

Ferris Wheels

In our DT lessons, we have been learning all about mechanisms. We have explored wheels, axles and axle holders and their importance in a ferris/fairground wheel. We explored different designs of ferris wheels before designing and creating our own from recycled materials.

World Book Day

On Thursday 6th March, we celebrated World Book Day. The children were invited to dress up as their favourite book character and we had such a fantastic array of costumes ranging from Harry Potter, The Worst Witch, Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The children have written a review about their favourite books and have created their own bookmarks, which they cannot wait to use in our reading sessions.

Bhangra Dancing

As part of our commitment to enriching the children's opportunities, we were lucky enough to be treated to a Bhangra Dance workshop. The children learnt some simple steps before incorporating these into a routine about farming.

Science Week:

The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Science Workshop. They took part in a range of different activities about gravity, resistance and even fire! In the classroom, the children explored 'capillary action' using paper towels, felt tip pens and water. Capillary action happens when a liquid moves up through a hollow tube or into a spongy, solid material. It happens when three forces work together: cohesion, adhesion and surface tension. They also looked at the 'Coke and Mentos' experiment. As a Mentos candy is dropped inside the bottle, the carbon dioxide molecules attach to it. In addition, the tiny pores on a larger surface area of Mentos ultimately speed up the release of the gas, which creates bubbles that rise to the surface and push the drink, eventually resulting in a blast.

Minibeast Hunt

In Science, we have been learning all about habitats. We have explored different habitats, adaptations needed to survive in habitats and what species may live in certain habitats. As part of this learning, we have explored microhabitats in our school environment. The children were fascinated to see what minibeasts lived in our outdoor area and they were very respectful to the habitats.

Capacity and Volume

In our maths lessons, we have been exploring capacity and volume. Capacity is the amount something can hold, whereas volume is a measure of the space taken up by something. Class 2 went outside and explore the different capacities of a variety of containers.
