Curriculum Enrichment

Computing - Programming a Robot

In Computing, we have been learning how to programme a robot. We looked at how to programme and control a robot using an app on our iPad before exploring how to apply this in a real context.

Jigsaw - Dreams and Goals

In our ‘Dreams and Goals’ lessons, we firstly discussed goals as a class and the term ‘realistic’. We worked together using our communication to help achieve a collective goal, before looking at examples of children achieving success. The children were then asked to think about their successes and we stored these in a class treasure chestOnce we had achieved success as an individual, we worked together to create an end product. We needed to work together to create some imaginary birds for our garden of dreams. We wanted our garden to be safe, calm, happy and successful.

Design and Technology - Mechanisms (Moving Monsters)

In our D&T lessons, we have explored what a lever, linkage and pivot are and explored the difference. We have looked at different toys and identified the parts in the toy that make it move and labelled them accurately. We have created linkages that produce the desired input and output motions and designed our own monsters. We then evaluated our designs against the agreed criteria, before assembling our monsters.

Design and Technology - Mechanisms

In our D&T lessons, we have been focusing on developing mechanisms. Our task was to develop a fairground wheel that would move on an axle. We had to create a wheel, axle, axle holder and pods to hold the people in. We even added some decoration to our wheels.

Christingle Making - Friday 12th January

The Open the Book team came in to help us make a Christingle for the Church Service at St Giles Church. Christingle means 'Christ Child' and they are made from an orange decorated with red tape, sweets or dried fruit and a candle. Each of these different elements has a special meaning:

  • The orange symbolises the world.
  • The red ribbon shows God's love for the world and the blood of Jesus.
  • The sweets/dried fruit represents God's creation.
  • The four cocktail sticks can represent either the four seasons or the four corners of the worl.
  • The candle represents Jesus being the light of the world, bringing hope to those in darkness.
