Design and Technology - Exploring Stability

In our Design and Technology lessons, our aim is to make a stable structure. We are going to make Baby Bear’s chair, from the fairytale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. To begin our learning sequence, we investigated which shape would provide the most stability. We used play dough to create three different 3D shapes and tested the height that they moved (this helped us to practise using a ruler to find the measurement, which we have been learning in maths). We identified that our structure would need:

  • A flat base
  • A wide base
  • A low height

We identified that the square based pyramid and the cube were the most stable shapes and the sphere was unstable.
