Home Learning

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all safe and well! We have started putting together some home learning website pages for you. These sites can give you some great online lessons during your time away from school and some fantastic resources for the children. I am sure, as time goes on, this bank of links will grow so please keep coming back and checking out our homework section!

We are also busy developing Google Classroom for you. It will be ready in a few weeks and teachers will place content on there for your children to use at home. We have recorded a small demonstration video on how to access Google Classroom and this can be found in the Video Resource Centre by clicking the link below.

Many thanks

Homework Class 5 2019-20

  • There is once again a slight change this  homework term to our homework. In preparation for transition to Bredon Hill Academy, the children will be recieving a weekly piece of Maths or Literacy homework to complete. These will be handed out on a Friday and will need to be completed by the following Thursday.
  • Once again there will be a number of challenges set on your child’s topic web. You can also find these challenges on the homework section of the website (see below). This is in addition to the weekly homework the children will have on Maths and Literacy.
  • They work on a points system, complete as much or as little as you would like, the children who have collected enough points at the end of a half term will receive a certificate.
  • We would expect each child to aim for a bronze certificate, however we are not expecting any of the children to complete all of the challenges.
  • Every Thursday afternoon there will be an opportunity for the children to share the homework they have done that week. This just makes it easier for me to keep track of who has completed which challenges.
  • Bronze Certificate – 50 points
  • Silver Certificate – 70 points
  • Gold Certificate – 100 points
  • I know this is new and may seem a little daunting at first, with extra weekly homework, but feedback came from the parents that homework could do with a refresh. So we have developed challenges that children can choose from, with activities that would be fun to do as a family, but also continue with weekly homework to challenge the children in Maths and Literacy. If you have any questions my door is always open.

Homework - Weekly Homework, Spellings and Times Tables        13.3.20 to 19.3.20

Weekly homework is back this week after our adventures in Malvern. After celebrating World Book Day earlier this week I would like the children to get back on top of their reading so I am setting them the challenge to read at home three times during the week. The children should share the book with their parents, grandparents or any other significant adult. It would be wonderful if you could question your children on their book and I have placed some questions below to help with this. All the questions focus on the difficult skill of inference one of the hardest skills they have to practise.

- What makes you think .......? Give evidence for your opinion.

- What words or phrases give you that impression?

- Why did the character behave in this way?

- Can you explain why the character would feel like this?

-  Why has the author selected this word?

We are going to have a review of their Times Table knowledge so could all the children please practise their 2, 3, 5, 10, 11 and 12 times tables ready for a test on Thursday.

The spellings are based on the suffix of tion, sion, ssion or cian. They are all listed below for the children to learn over the week.

Once again, if you need any help, please come and see me or email/phone the office!

Many thanks

Homework - Weekly Homework, Spellings and Times Tables        28.2.20 to 5.3.20

Due to Takeover Day and Malvern their will not be any set homework this week for the children. Could you all keep practising times tables and you are welcome to choose any of the homeowrk pieces of the grid!

Takeover Day is on Monday and below is a list of clothes the children should wear on Monday. I will be opening the school gates early on Monday for the Year 5 children to enter school. Unfortunately, the front entrance still has building work in place so the children will enter school through the hall door.

Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Head teachers, Computing Technicians, Deputy Head teachers: smart clothes and shoes, pens and pencils for working with and a bag to carry books and lunch if needed.

Sports Coaches: track suits or sports wear in order to be able to deliver sports lessons and a bag for the lunch if they need it.

The children will also need to bring in a warm waterproof coat in case our weather continues to provie us with the wet conditions.

Many thanks

Homework - Weekly Homework, Spellings and Times Tables        14.2.20 to 27.2.20

Over half term we would like the children to take part in some practical homework in preparation for their visit to Malvern in a few weeks time. It would be great if the children would be able to both make and strip their own bedding (a single duvet cover and pillow case) and make a tasty sandwich that they are able to it! Both these skills will be essential for thier trip and also great life skills!

As we have such a busy half term coming up, it would also be great for the children to take a break and have a very well earned rest! Enjoy the holiday!

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Spring Term Week 1 Suffix Spellings 2020

Homework - Spellings, Homework and Reading        13.12.19 to 07.01.20

This week the children will have their spelling test on a selection of words they have learnt over this term. Please could you help them to practise over the weekend and review these words. It is important that the children learn the spelling rules and retain their knowledge to use within their own writing.

Over the Christmas break could the children continue to practise their reading. We have had an amazing amount of children achieve their target of '20 reads' over the half term, thank you for all your support at home, and now let us continue to help the children develop their reading skills!

Finally, we are going to be writing our very own World War 2 evacuee story based on the life of Willie from 'Goodnight Mr Tom'. The children will be taking home a planning sheet this week and it would be wonderful if they could develop a plan for their story over the holidays. If they would like to start writing it, that would be even better! Willie will begin his journey on an evacuation train from London, what adventure will happen to him on the train before he arrives in Weirwold? Who will he meet? What problem may happen and how could he solve it?

Thank you for all your support over the term and all the hard work you have done at home with your children, it really makes a difference! All the staff from Year 5 wish you all a wonderful (bug free) Christmas and we are looking forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Homework - Spellings, Homework and Reading        6.12.19 to 12.12.19

The children have been working very hard on all their spellings over the last term. At the end of each term we always have a  review of what they have learnt and a larger 20 word spelling test. Could the children, over the next week, look back over all the spellings they have learnt this term ready for a test on Monday 16th December 2019. All the spellings the children need are on the website, but if they have been recieving different spellings this term, I have copies for you if you would like them all again.

A little reminder, it is also the last week for homework this week. If you would like another piece to work on, please come and see myself of Mrs Page and we can get any work the children need. We will also be counting up the 'reading points' at the end of next week, so it is a good chance to get some reads in over the weekend!

This week we are exploring decimals. The challenge the children have been set is stuck inside their Homework books. The children need to 'Reason' about where they would place the decimal on the number line. They will need to mark the position of the decimal on each of the number line and then below (using the lines within their books) explain why they have placed the number where they have. Finally, if they have finished all three number lines, they may also want to set their own number line for a member of their family to solve! Have fun exploring!

Homework - Mr Dennis - Class 5 - 03/05/19 - 09/05/19

Maths Homework

This week we would like the children to try working out some very different times tables. Each group have been set a number and we would like them to work out and find all the corresponding numbers from 1 to 12 for this table. For example if they are solving the times table of 32 they would work out 1 x 32 = 32, 2 x 32 = 64,  3 x 32 = 96 etc. The children have been shown the process in class and we would like them to see if they can use the principle of 'I know this, so I will also know ...'

Group 1

Explore the times tables of 37 and 54

Group 2

Explore the times table of 24.

Literacy Homework

Could all children please read a chapter of either their reading for pleasure book or their reading book form the library.

Spellings

Could all children please revisit the Exception Spellings that were set to practise over the Easter break.

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Homework – Mr Dennis  – WC 5.4.19 Due in 29-04-19

Topic

Here is the homework for the Easter holidays. We are starting to think about Leavers, and we are going to be putting together their own 'Leavers Book'. Over the holidays, could the children choose a page in their Homework Books, place in the date, title and then answer the four  questions below. It would be great if the children could use the questions as the headings for each section.

1. All about me (a section where they can tell us about themselves, their hobbies and their ambitions for life)

2. My Favourite moment this year

3. My favourite moment at Bredon Hancock's First School

4. What I will most miss about Bredon Hancock's First School

Each section will need to be completed with a paragraph of information. It would be fantastic, while writing their own paragraphs, if the children can re read what they have written, check their punctuation and include possible relative clauses and parenthesis.

Maths

The children also have Education City to allow them to practise many of the topics we have covered over the last two terms. I would also like the children to continue to practise all their Times Tables from 2-12 in order to allow them to have quick recall of their facts ready for next term.

Spellings

The children will be having their spelling test during the first week back after Easter. I have included the usual 20 Exception Words spellings that they will need to practise.

Many thanks and have  a wonderful holiday!

Mr Dennis

Homework – Mr Dennis  – WC 29.03.19 Due in 04-04-19

Due to the testing we are currently doing in Class 5, the children have an extra week to learn the times tables and spellings that were set last week. For homework, I would love the children to simply enjoy reading their books from the school library or from the reading for pleasure box. Enjoy the sunshine and a good book and collect some 'ticks' in preparation for Mrs Millar's tea party!

Many thanks!

Mr Dennis

Homework – Mr Dennis  – WC 15.03.19 Due in 21-03-19

Homework – Mr Dennis  – Space and Science – WC 28.02.19 Due in 05-03-19

In preparation for our next literacy topic I would like the children to research some very famous people involved in space. You can choose between Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin or Michael Collins. It would be great if the children could find out about the person’s early personal  life, their early career, their later fame and success and also the impact they have had in their field of science or space. If the children can collate some facts about these areas and place them in their Homework Diaries.

This information will be used to create biographies with the children during literacy over the next two weeks. I would hope the children have fun creating an interesting page of information with a selection of single, double and multi clause sentences. Please help the children to check their punctuation and spelling to ensure they do a fantastic piece of work.

Many thanks and have fun!

Mr Dennis

Homework 15-02-19 to 28-02-19

Topic

With the up coming trip to Malvern Outdoor Elements Centre it would be wonderful for the children to complete some domestic challenges this half term holiday! We would like the children to make their own packed lunch for a trip out during their half term break, including a sandwich, and also to make their own bed! This would require them to take a pillow case on and off and also the duvet case on and off. These are both essential skills for them to manage during their time during the Malvern residential. Some photos of their efforts would be brilliant in order to place into their homework books when they are back in school on Monday 25th February 2019.

Malvern Meeting

On Monday 25th February 2019 there is the arranged Malvern meeting at 3.15pm in the hall. Present will be a representative from Malvern who will be there to answer any of your questions about the trip. We all hope this will be helpful for you.

Bikeability

On Friday 1st March 2019 the children (weather permitting) will complete their Bikeability course. This will mean we will need all the bikes back to school and on the large playground on the morning of Friday 1st March 2019. The children will all go out again and take their final assessment with the instructors Robin and Pam. The bikes will then need to be returned home after school on Friday 1st March 2019.

Spellings and Literacy

Please could the children log onto their Education City Homework page and practise the 'prefix and suffix' spellings that are placed ready for the children to use. Children can also have a go at the KS2 Year 5 Word List game.

Maths

Please could the children log onto their Education City page and practise the 'fractions' games that have been placed on the site.

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Take Over Day 2019

Please could the children come dressed smartly for their role in school tomorrow. We have talked to the boys about wearing smart clothes, sensible smart shoes, if possible no jeans, and a tie is optional. They will also need to bring a water proof jacket, as usual, to keep them dry on the playground.

The girls have also been encouraged to come to school smartly ready to be teachers. Sensible shoes are essential and they have a choice of having their hair up or down. It would be a sensible choice to have a bobble in school just in case they do need to tie it back. As usual a water proof coat is essential.

Sports coaches can come to school in tracksuits and trainers, ready to take their lessons tomorrow. If they would like to wear shorts, it may be an idea to have them on under their tracksuit as the start of the day will be cold.

We have also talked to the children that they do not need to wait on the playground tomorrow. They can come straight into school ready to go to their class or teacher to begin their work. This may be 5 or 10 minutes earlier than usual, but they need to prepare their lessons!

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Homework       8.2.19 to 14.2.19

Topic

This week we will be starting to prepare for Take Over Day. The children, over the weekend, need to start thinking about what they would like to do with the children in the roles they have been given. Below are a list of the jobs the children will be doing and some of the activities they will be asked to do:

Head teachers and Deputy Head teachers -  plan a Collective Worship

Teachers - teach a short lesson about a favourite subject

Teaching Assistants - teach a small mathematics activity to a group of children in their class

ICT Technicians - teach a small group pf children about an APP on the iPad

Sports Coaches - plan a small PE lesson based on their favourite sport

All the children will need to do is come up with an idea and jot some notes down ready for planning their activities on Monday.

Due to Bikeability we have not been able to test the children on their spellings or times tables, so the homework will remain the same as last weeks. The last three groups did not complete the Bikeability course due to the weather conditions. The team from Bikeability will send us a date when they can come in and work with us again to allow all the children to complete their course.

Many thanks

Mr Dennis

Homework       31.1.19 to 7.2.19

Bikeability

Please could the children come prepared for the weather next week. The children are able to bring jogging bottoms to wear over their shorts or trousers. They can also bring trainers in to wear whilst riding the bikes. Both instructors have said the children are able to wear gloves, bring warm waterproof coats and beanie hats to wear underneath helmets. I hope this information helps.

Thanks

Mr Dennis

Homework       25.1.19 to 31.1.19

Topic

Next week in Year 5 the children will be researching and creating their own persuasive letters in order to apply for 'Takeover Day' jobs within school. For homework this week, I would love the children to create a piece of work, within their homework books, explaining which job they would like in school and why. This can be in the form of a mind map, poster, letter, annotated picture etc. It would be wonderful if they could choose two different options, a top choice, and a second choice!

The jobs available this year are: Head teacher, Deputy Head, class teacher, teaching assistant, sports coach, ICT technician and dinner supervisor.

Good luck, and I cannot wait to see what the children come up with!

Maths

The children are exploring their knowledge of times tables and division facts:

Group 1: please explore the 7 and 8 times table and the associated division facts,

eg 5 x 8 = 40   so   40 ÷ 8 = 5.

Group 2: please explore the 2 and 8 times tables.

Homework         11.01.19 to 17.01.19

Topic

This week we are starting of homework with our new Space topic. In the children's homework books I would love them to be able to research a little bit about our own solar system. The focus of this could be about the planets, the sun, the moon, anything that grabs their interest! It can be presented within their homework books in anyway. This could be mind map, facts, a labelled picture, however they would like to present their information.

Maths

The children are exploring their times tables and looking at speed of recall and the associated division facts.

Group 1: please practise the four times table and the associated division facts eg 2 x 4 = 8    so    8 ÷ 4 = 2.

Group 2: please practise the four and the six times tables.

Spellings

We are currently looking at Exception words. Could the children please pratise their groups relevant spellings for a test on Thursday 24th January.

Class 5 Homework 30.11.18 to 7.12.18

Topic Homework

Please could the children complete their own Anderson Shelters. We are having a Class 5 Museum at the end of term and would love to have the shelters on display for everyone to see. If you would like to make them out of cake, it would be fantastic, but please only bring these in on the morning of Wednesday 12th December.

The children also have a comprehension to complete. This is a wonderful chance to work together on developing comprehension answers about a classic text. This children will then stick this into their homework books and we will mark and discuss the answers together as a class. Education City is also available for all children to access and play!

Spellings

We are not setting any new spellings this week. If you could revise all the spellings the children have done over the term and we will have an end of term test during the week beginning 10th December 2018.
